The gluten in a supplement rarely comes from the active ingredient. It comes from the supporting cast — wheat-derived starch used as a binder or flow agent, or a coating on a tablet — or from cross-contamination where a product is made on shared equipment. That's why people who avoid gluten, whether for celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, often end up reading supplement labels as carefully as food labels. Products labelled gluten-free have been formulated without gluten-containing ingredients; if you need certified testing rather than a label statement, check the individual product page or the manufacturer's certification.

Where gluten hides in a supplement

A few usual suspects: starch used as a filler or binder (it can be corn, potato or wheat), "dextrin" and similar carriers, tablet coatings, and shared manufacturing lines. Capsules are often a safer bet than coated tablets simply because they need fewer excipients, though that's a rule of thumb rather than a guarantee — the label is what counts.
