About SAMe supplements

SAMe is short for S-adenosylmethionine. Your body makes it continuously from methionine (an amino acid) and ATP, and then spends it — SAMe is the molecule that hands off methyl groups in a process called methylation. Methylation is involved in a long list of everyday jobs, from building neurotransmitters to processing compounds in the liver to maintaining cartilage. Supplemental SAMe is the same molecule, made by fermentation and stabilised as a salt, usually tosylate or butanedisulfonate.

Why enteric coating matters here

SAMe is unstable. It degrades on contact with moisture, heat and stomach acid, which is why almost every SAMe product is an enteric-coated tablet rather than a capsule or powder — the coating is designed to survive the stomach and release further down. It's also why you'll see SAMe sold in individual blister packs rather than a loose bottle: each tablet stays sealed until the moment you take it.
