Choline is an essential nutrient your body needs but often doesn’t make enough of on its own. It’s a building block for acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter involved in memory and muscle control) and for the membranes around every cell, and it plays a role in normal fat metabolism and liver function. You’ll find it here in several forms — from basic choline bitartrate to the well-absorbed cognitive forms citicoline and Alpha-GPC — including combinations with inositol and choline-rich lecithin.

    What choline does

Choline is a building block for acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in memory, focus, and muscle control, and for the phospholipids that make up the membrane around every cell. It also plays a recognized role in normal fat metabolism and in keeping the liver working properly — choline helps the liver move fat rather than letting it accumulate. Your body makes a little on its own, but most people rely on food and, sometimes, a supplement to top up.

The forms, and how they differ

Choline comes in several forms. Choline bitartrate is the basic, economical form. Citicoline (also called CDP-choline, and sold as Cognizin) and Alpha-GPC are the better-absorbed forms favoured for cognitive support — Alpha-GPC is also popular with athletes. Phosphatidylcholine is the form found in lecithin and cell membranes. Each delivers choline; they differ in how well they're absorbed and what they're typically used for.

    Choline for brain vs. liver

Choline supplements tend to be chosen for one of two reasons. For cognitive support, people reach for citicoline or Alpha-GPC — see our brain & cognitive health collection for the wider range. For the liver and methylation side, basic choline (often paired with TUDCA) is common — see liver support. The nutrient is the same; the form and pairing follow the goal.

    Food sources and lecithin

Eggs and liver are the richest dietary sources of choline, with meat, fish, and some beans contributing smaller amounts. Lecithin — often from sunflower — is a food-based source of phosphatidylcholine. People who eat few eggs or follow plant-based diets are the ones most likely to fall short.

    Choline in Canada

Choline supplements sold in Canada carry a Natural Product Number (NPN) from Health Canada and ship from our Ontario warehouse to addresses across Canada.

    A note on choline

Choline is generally well tolerated at normal doses. Very high intakes can cause a fishy body odour, lowered blood pressure, or digestive upset, so there's no benefit to overdoing it. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication, check with your healthcare provider before starting.
