A Naturopathic Doctor's Top Picks for Supplements

A Naturopathic Doctor's Top Picks for Supplements

As a Naturopathic Doctor, I see patients all the time that come into the first visit with a big doggy bag of supplements questioning why they are still not feeling 100%. I always say it is better to take fewer supplements but ones that you know are targeting the root issue of your health concern. For example, you search Google and buy the 5 things it recommends for your condition. Seeing a Naturopath can help you figure out the root cause and hopefully save some money by taking fewer supplements, that still addresses your main concern.

Keep in mind; eating a whole-food diet with fresh produce is the best way to get all the vitamins and minerals your body needs. Considering the North American diet, we do tend to fall short on some important vitamins and minerals, where supplementation can come in quite handy! Some nutrients are more indicated than others depending on your individual lifestyle, diet, and current needs. With that being said, there are a few vitamins and minerals that most of us always need…

VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is one of my favourites! It is a potent antioxidant that is used to boost the immune system, kill free radicals that can damage healthy cells, and promote collagen production for healthy skin. It is also important for healthy bones, gums and ligaments. Lastly, Vitamin C is involved in the production of neurotransmitters and adrenal gland hormones. The list goes on...

VITAMIN D3

You can get Vitamin D from the sun but living in Canada we don’t get enough sun all year round. In order to meet our requirements, most of the skin has to be exposed to the sun vs. just parts of the body. Vitamin D helps to support bone and muscle function. It is also necessary for proper absorption of different minerals (calcium, magnesium, zinc) and supports the thyroid gland. It is important to take Vitamin D with some form of fat, like coconut oil so the body can absorb it optimally. It is super easy to get your daily dose of Vitamin D in a liquid form, as 1 drop usually = 1000 IU.

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

Essential fatty acids are difficult to maintain your daily requirements even if you are regularly eating fish. Essential fatty acids are found in fish oil and are one of the best anti-inflammatories you could consume. Omega 3’s support healthy cholesterol levels, cognitive function, joint health, skin, and heart health. They help to support both physical and mental health and can go a long way to feeling your best in both departments. They are great to have around for both adults and children. In children, they can support healthy brain function. Some fish oils have the Omega 3’s, Omega 6’s, and Omega 9’s. Keep in mind that the typical North American diet is generally high in Omega 6 and Omega 9, so just focus on the Omega-3s.

MAGNESIUM

Magnesium regulates over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, including heart health, fat breakdown, muscle contractions, DNA repair, and stress reactions. An interesting side note is a high level of carbohydrates and caffeine in your diet can actually result in reduced magnesium absorption!

Let’s get ready to kick-start the summer with feeling our very best – mentally, emotionally, and physically!
