Who Muscle Heat Is For
- Active people with sore muscles after training, sports or a long run
- Anyone with muscle aches from yard work, moving or a long day on their feet
- People who prefer a warming lotion over a cooling gel
- Those who like a classic wintergreen, camphor and menthol liniment in a lotion base
- People who already use OptiMSM products and want it in a topical
Who this product is NOT for:
- Wounds, broken, damaged or irritated skin — and do not bandage over it
- People sensitive to salicylates or aspirin, unless a health care practitioner approves — it contains methyl salicylate
- Anyone who is pregnant, nursing or using anticoagulants, unless a health care provider has approved it
- People who want a cooling sensation rather than warmth
Vitamart's Take
Muscle Heat is a proper analgesic lotion, not just a scented rub: the label lists real percentages of wintergreen oil, camphor, menthol, eucalyptus and capsaicin, the same family of ingredients found in classic heat liniments. Prairie Naturals adds 10% OptiMSM and a softer base of mango butter and rose hip seed oil. Use a thin layer, massage it in, and stick to the 4-applications-per-day limit. Keep it away from your eyes, and wash your hands after applying — capsaicin lingers on fingertips.
How Muscle Heat Compares
Warming vs. cooling lotions
Muscle Heat uses capsicum and wintergreen for a warming sensation, balanced with camphor and menthol. Menthol-only lotions feel cool instead. Which you prefer is largely personal.
Muscle Heat vs. OptiMSM Skin Cream
Prairie Naturals OptiMSM Skin Cream is a moisturizer for skin with 14% MSM and aloe vera. Muscle Heat is an analgesic lotion for temporary relief of muscle aches and pains.
Topical vs. oral MSM
Prairie Naturals OptiMSM 1000mg capsules are taken by mouth. Muscle Heat is applied right where it aches, with MSM in the lotion base.
What Is Wintergreen Oil?
- An essential oil from the leaves of the wintergreen plant (Gaultheria)
- Its main compound is methyl salicylate, a salicylate that gives classic muscle rubs their familiar scent
- In Muscle Heat it is standardized to 95% methyl salicylate and makes up 12.50% of the lotion
- It works alongside camphor, menthol and capsaicin, which create warming and cooling sensations on the skin
- Because it is a salicylate, people sensitive to aspirin or salicylates should check with a practitioner first
Recommended Purpose
- Natural analgesic for the temporary relief of skeletal muscle aches and pains
How To Use
- Apply a thin layer to the affected area and massage into the skin
- Repeat as necessary, but do not exceed 4 applications per day
- For external use only — avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes
- Do not apply to wounds or damaged skin, and do not bandage
- Wash hands after applying
- Discontinue use if a rash or irritation occurs; consult a health care provider if symptoms worsen or persist beyond 7 days
