Clinical study shows valerian is “good alternative to strong sleep medication”

In publishing the results of a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, researchers concluded: “This natural medication can be regarded as a good alternative to conventional, strong medication…” The researchers noted that prescription medications carry the risk of addiction and other serious side effects.35

In fact, valerian’s ability to relieve insomnia was tested in a clinical study against a leading prescription drug. Researchers gave valerian to half of the test group. The other half received the prescription drug oxazepam.

For relief of sleeplessness, 82.8% of patients taking valerian rated it “very good,” compared with 73.4% in the oxazepam group.36,37 Thus, valerian beat the prescription drug by nearly 10 percentage points. But, as researchers noted, valerian does not have the morning-after grogginess the drug does.

In a double-blind clinical study, test volunteers’ overall quality of life was significantly more improved in the valerian group relative to the placebo group. Patients got significantly improved sleep without side effects or rebound sleeplessness when they stopped taking valerian.

“Rebound sleeplessness” is a common side effect of sleep drugs where sleep problems return worse than before if the medication is stopped. Sometimes, patients develop a tolerance for sleeping pills. They need to take stronger and stronger doses just to get the same effect.38

For example, a clinical study published in the European Journal of Medical Research showed that hops, in combination with valerian, significantly improved sleep efficiency. Participants got to sleep faster, and slept longer and more deeply.41

    This is amazing. Couldn't sleep, was always tossing and turning all night. Take this and hour before bed and sleep through the night. Wake up in the morning feeling well rested and not at all groggy. Repurchased multiple time.

    did not work for me

    This product did not improve my insomnia at all. Though, please note my insomnia is due to a prescription drug's side effect (causing me menopausal symptoms when I am not even peri-menopausal). I will continue trying different (sleep aids) until I find one that works.

    Excellent Product

    Sleep sure is almost as benign a sleeping aid one can purchase. I just take the dose an hour before bed and I will slowly start to feel sluggish. In the morning I do not feel fatigued at all from taking the pill.
