Native to North America, American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) was first discovered in present-day Montreal in 1716. Traditional Chinese medicine clearly distinguishes between Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) and American ginseng.

American ginseng commonly contains ten times more of the ginsenosides responsible for central nervous system anti-stress activity than the ginsenosides acting as a central nervous system stimulant. Due to the compositional differences, traditional Chinese medicine supports that American ginseng offers a cooling yin effect which offsets the "heat" caused by the stress of noise and over-working.
