Saffron is one of the world’s most prized spices — the deep-red threads of the crocus flower — and it has a long history of use in herbal traditions. As a supplement it’s most often taken for mood support: saffron is traditionally used to help support a positive, balanced mood, which is why you’ll see it in formulas named for “mood” and “zen.” You’ll find it here as standardized saffron extract capsules, typically around 14–15 mg, some on their own and some blended with other herbs for sleep or focus.

    What saffron is

Saffron is one of the world's most prized spices — the deep-red threads (stigmas) hand-harvested from the crocus flower. Beyond the kitchen, it has a long history in herbal traditions. Its active compounds, crocin and safranal, are what supplement makers concentrate into a standardized extract, so a small capsule delivers a consistent amount without needing the costly spice itself.

    Saffron and mood

As a supplement, saffron is most often taken for mood support — it's traditionally used to help support a positive, balanced mood, which is why you'll see it in formulas named for "mood" and "zen." It's an area of ongoing research, and individual results vary. One honest caveat: if you're dealing with persistent low mood or a diagnosed condition, that's something to work through with a healthcare provider, not a supplement on its own.

    Saffron blends: sleep and focus

Saffron also turns up in combination formulas. Some pair it with ingredients aimed at sleep, others with herbs like ginkgo for focus and memory. If general mood support is what you're after, those blends are worth a look alongside single-ingredient saffron.

    Dose and standardization

Most saffron supplements provide a standardized extract at around 14–15 mg — the amount used in much of the research on saffron. Look for products that state they're standardized for consistency. Whole-herb saffron (around 50 mg) and actual saffron threads are also available.

    A note on saffron

At normal supplement doses saffron is generally well tolerated; there's no benefit to taking large amounts, and high doses aren't advisable. Pregnant women should avoid supplemental saffron. If you take medication for mood or anything else, talk to your healthcare provider before adding saffron.
