MCT oil is a concentrated fat made from medium-chain triglycerides — fats your body can turn into energy quickly, without the lengthy digestion longer fats need. It’s usually derived from coconut, and it’s a staple for people following keto or low-carb diets and for adding to morning coffee. You’ll find it here as liquids, powders, and creamers, including pure C8, C8/C10 blends, and MCT-based products. Unflavoured oils are the versatile pick; powders travel well and tend to be gentler on digestion.

    What MCT oil is

MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides — a type of fat with a shorter chain length than the long-chain fats in most foods. That shorter structure lets the body absorb and use them for energy quickly, without the lengthier digestion longer fats require. MCT oil is usually concentrated from coconut, which is why it became a staple for people following keto or low-carb diets and for adding to morning coffee.

C8, C10, and what the labels mean

The numbers refer to chain length. C8 (caprylic acid) is the fastest to convert into ketones, the energy molecules the body makes from fat. C10 (capric acid) converts a little more slowly. Many oils blend both for a balance of speed and value, while pure C8 products (like Bulletproof Brain Octane and NOW Caprylic Acid) isolate the fastest fraction. Neither is "better" — it depends on whether you want the quickest hit or a steadier one.

    Liquid, powder, or creamer

Liquids are the most concentrated and stir into coffee, smoothies, or salad dressings. Powders travel well, mix without separating, and tend to be gentler on the stomach. Creamers put MCT into a coffee-whitener format, and some products combine MCT with collagen or coconut oil. The right one mostly comes down to how you plan to use it.

    How to use MCT oil

Start small — about a teaspoon — and build up over a week or two. Taking too much too soon is the usual reason people get an upset stomach. Add it to coffee, smoothies, or food; it isn't meant for frying, since it has a low smoke point. Many people take it in the morning or before a workout for a quick, sugar-free source of energy.

    MCT oil in Canada

MCT oils and MCT-based products sold in Canada ship from our Ontario warehouse to addresses across Canada. Most here are coconut-derived, and many are organic and non-GMO — check the label for the source and C8/C10 breakdown that suit you.

    Safety and side effects

MCT oil is generally well tolerated, but some people get mild digestive discomfort — bloating or loose stools — when starting, especially at higher doses. Begin with a small amount and increase gradually. If you're pregnant, have a medical condition, or take medication, check with your healthcare provider before use.
