Iron helps a child’s body make healthy red blood cells and carry oxygen, supporting steady energy, focus and normal growth. Because kids don’t always get enough from food alone — especially picky eaters, toddlers moving off milk, and active or vegetarian children — a kids’ iron supplement can help fill the gap. You’ll find gentle options here in forms made for children: liquid drops for babies and toddlers, great-tasting chewables, and gummies, including non-constipating formulas that are easier on little tummies. Iron supplements can look and taste like candy, so always keep them out of reach and give only the amount your child needs — and check with your child’s doctor first, since they can confirm whether your child needs extra iron. Shipped across Canada from our Ontario warehouse.

Why kids need iron

Iron is an essential mineral that helps the body produce hemoglobin, the part of red blood cells that carries oxygen. Getting enough supports a child’s energy, concentration and normal growth and development. Children grow quickly and their iron needs rise at certain stages, so it’s a nutrient worth keeping an eye on — especially during the toddler years and growth spurts.

Which kids may need extra iron?

Some children are more likely to fall short, including picky eaters, toddlers who drink a lot of cow’s milk, vegetarian and vegan kids, and very active children. Signs a child might be low can include unusual tiredness, paleness or low appetite. These can have many causes, so the best step is a quick chat with your doctor, who can test iron levels and confirm whether a supplement is needed before you start one.

Forms of iron for kids

  • Liquid drops — easy to measure for babies and toddlers; can be given directly or added to a small amount of food or drink.
  • Chewable tablets — a measured dose for older children who can chew safely, often in kid-friendly flavours.
  • Gummies — a tasty option many kids will take willingly; treat them like any supplement and store safely.
  • Non-constipating formulas — gentler liquid and plant-based irons designed to be easier on the stomach, since iron can sometimes cause constipation.

Iron is absorbed better alongside vitamin C, so pairing a dose with a little fruit or juice can help. It’s best given away from milk and dairy, which can reduce absorption.

A note on safety

Keep iron supplements out of reach of children at all times. Iron is one of the most common causes of accidental poisoning in young children, because the products can look and taste like candy. Give only the amount directed for your child’s age, use child-resistant caps, and store everything up high and out of sight. Always check with your child’s doctor before starting iron — more is not better, and iron is best given when a child actually needs it.
