Get expert advice

Iron bisglycinate is iron bound to the amino acid glycine (a chelated form), which makes it gentle on the stomach and far less likely to cause the constipation or upset linked with older iron salts. That makes it a popular choice for anyone who needs to top up iron — to support healthy red blood cells, oxygen transport and everyday energy — without the digestive side effects. You’ll find it here from 18 mg up to 45 mg, often paired with vitamin C or B12 to support absorption. New to iron? Compare all the forms on our iron supplements page. Shipped across Canada from our Ontario warehouse.

Why choose iron bisglycinate

Iron bisglycinate (also called ferrous bisglycinate or by brand names like Ferrochel) is a chelated iron — the iron is wrapped around glycine, an amino acid, which helps it absorb well while staying gentle. Compared with traditional ferrous sulfate, many people find it much less likely to cause constipation, nausea or stomach cramps, so it’s easier to take consistently.

Choosing a strength

Products here range from about 18 mg to 45 mg of elemental iron per capsule. Lower strengths suit gentle daily maintenance, while higher strengths are used when more iron is needed. Many formulas add vitamin C, B12 or folate to support absorption and red blood cell formation, and most are vegan-friendly vegetable capsules — check the label.

How to take it

Iron absorbs best with a source of vitamin C and away from coffee, tea, and calcium or dairy, which can reduce uptake. Some people take it on an empty stomach for maximum absorption, but taking it with a little food is fine if that’s easier on you. Because too much iron is harmful, it’s best to supplement when you actually need it — a simple blood test from your doctor can confirm.
