What inositol is

Inositol is a naturally occurring compound — sometimes grouped with the B vitamins — that the body uses as part of how cells send and receive signals. It's present in foods like fruit, beans, and grains, and the body makes some on its own. In supplements it's most often sold as myo-inositol.

Myo-inositol vs. D-chiro-inositol

These are two related forms of inositol. Myo-inositol is the most abundant form in the body and the most common in supplements. D-chiro-inositol is a second form the body makes from myo-inositol. Some products combine the two in a 40:1 ratio (forty parts myo to one part D-chiro), which mirrors a proportion found naturally in the body. Which you choose depends on what you and your healthcare provider are aiming for.

Forms: powder vs. capsules

Powders dissolve in water and make it easy to take larger or adjustable amounts, which is why inositol is often sold that way. Capsules offer a fixed, convenient dose. Some formulas combine inositol with folate or choline — check the label for what's included.
