    About FeraPro

    FeraPro is a Canadian iron supplement line, and unusually for a brand page it is one formula rather than a catalogue: the same blend of iron and cofactors, offered in three strengths. It was sold for a long time as Bob’s Iron Formula and renamed FeraPro, and the packaging still references the original. The 30 is the low-dose strength and the one Vitamart carries; the line also runs at 75mg and 150mg. It is certified Non-GMO and NSF Content Certified, vegan, and free from dairy, gluten, soy and corn, with a single non-medicinal ingredient.

    What is in FeraPro

    FeraPro puts its cofactors in the capsule rather than alongside it. Vitamin C is included because ascorbate takes part in the reduction step that non-heme iron depends on for absorption. B12 and folate are present in their active methylated forms — methylcobalamin and 5-MTHF — rather than as cyanocobalamin and folic acid. Glycine is an amino acid chelator. The one non-medicinal ingredient, hypromellose, forms the capsule.

    Ferrous fumarate

    Iron in supplements comes as either ferrous (Fe2+) or ferric (Fe3+) compounds, and the ferrous forms are the more readily absorbed of the two. Ferrous fumarate also carries a high proportion of elemental iron by weight, which is why a 30mg dose fits in one capsule. Worth knowing when comparing labels: the number on the front of an iron product is sometimes the compound weight and sometimes the elemental iron — they are not the same figure. FeraPro 30 states elemental.

    The methylated forms

    Methylcobalamin and 5-MTHF are the forms of B12 and folate the body uses directly, as opposed to cyanocobalamin and folic acid, which require conversion. Both vitamins are involved in red blood cell formation, which is why they appear in an iron formula rather than being left to a separate B12 product. Neither choice is a verdict on the other forms — it is a formulation decision about what is in the capsule.
