Calcium D-glucarate is the calcium salt of D-glucaric acid — a compound the body makes in small amounts and that also occurs naturally in fruit and vegetables such as oranges, apples and broccoli. It's taken as a capsule, most commonly at 650mg, and the interest in it centres on glucuronidation, one of the liver's conjugation pathways. Part of our calcium supplements range.

About calcium D-glucarate

D-glucaric acid occurs naturally in the body and in a range of fruit and vegetables — oranges, apples, grapefruit, broccoli and bean sprouts among them — but only in small amounts. Calcium D-glucarate is that acid bound to calcium, which makes it stable enough to put in a capsule. The calcium is the carrier here, not the point: the amount per capsule is small, so this isn't a substitute for a calcium supplement if bone health is what you're after.

Glucuronidation, in plain terms

Glucuronidation is one of the liver's phase II conjugation pathways. The liver attaches glucuronic acid to certain compounds, which makes them water-soluble so the body can carry them out. An enzyme called beta-glucuronidase can undo that attachment before the compound leaves. Calcium D-glucarate is studied for its effect on beta-glucuronidase activity — that mechanism is what most people are reading about when they look this ingredient up, including in the context of how the body handles hormones. It's a topic worth raising with a pharmacist or healthcare practitioner who knows your history, rather than self-directing from a supplement page.

Doses and formulas

650mg per capsule is the common strength for a single-ingredient product. There are also combination formulas — one pairs a smaller 163mg dose with milk thistle, which is a different approach: less of the D-glucarate, alongside a herb with its own long history in the liver support category. Read the label for the amount per capsule and the suggested serving, which differ between the two.

People comparing calcium D-glucarate often look at DIM as well, which comes at hormone metabolism from a different angle, and at milk thistle and the wider liver support range.
