    What bile salts do

Your liver makes bile continuously; your gallbladder stores it and releases a concentrated dose when you eat. Bile salts are the active part — they emulsify dietary fat, breaking large fat globules into smaller droplets so fat-digesting enzymes can finish the job. Bile also helps the body absorb the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, which ride along with dietary fat.

    After gallbladder removal

Gallbladder removal is common, and it changes the timing of bile rather than stopping it. Without a gallbladder to store and concentrate bile, the liver drips it into the gut steadily instead of releasing a burst with a meal — which is why some people find larger or fattier meals harder to handle afterward. Ox bile taken with meals is a common way people add support at the moment fat arrives. If you've recently had surgery, your healthcare provider is the right person to guide what you take and when.

    Bile salts vs. digestive enzymes

They do different jobs. Enzymes like lipase chemically break food down; bile salts physically emulsify fat first. Think of bile as the dish soap that cuts grease on a pan — it prepares the fat so the enzymes can work on it. Some products combine the two (Prairie Naturals Bile-Force pairs bile salts with lipase), and you can also browse digestive enzymes on their own.

    Ox bile and other forms

Most bile salt supplements are made from ox bile, which is chemically close to human bile and easy for the body to recognize. You'll find it here as capsules and tablets, some on their own and some combined with enzymes. Doses are commonly around 500 mg per capsule.

A note on using bile salts

If you have gallstones or a known bile duct blockage, don't take bile salts without medical advice — they can make those situations worse. If you've had gallbladder surgery or take medication, check with your healthcare provider first, and stop and seek advice if bile salts cause discomfort or diarrhea.
