Just two tablets per day gives you the optimum dose of cal/mag - that's what makes Organika's 2:1 cal-mag National Nutrition's best selling calcium. With zinc, D, & digestives. As an essential part of our diet, Calcium plays many important roles in normal body functions. It is required for strong bones and teeth, regulating muscle contractions and nerve impulses as well as activating cellular enzymes. Magnesium acts alongside Calcium in our muscles while Zinc helps to boost our immune systems. Organika®'s Calcium Magnesium Zinc with Vitamin D is a safe, Canadian choice for your calcium supplement.

The Importance of Calcium and Magnesium

Calcium is an important mineral for the optimal functioning of many body systems.  Calcium is a major mineral found in the bones and teeth.  Deficiency of calcium causes bone and joint diseases such as osteomalacia, osteoporosis and osteo-arthritis.  It also leads to poor growth and poor bone density in children.  Calcium also protects the body from heavy metal toxicity because if calcium is deficient lead is absorbed by the body and deposited in the teeth and bones.

The muscles use calcium during contractions and by the nerves for proper transmission of impulses.  If a deficiency of calcium affects the most important muscle, the heart, it can lead to arrhythmias.  Calcium also helps with insomnia and muscle cramps by relaxing the muscles.  Calcium lowers cholesterol, by inhibiting plaque formation, and lowers blood pressure, by ensuring the proper functioning of the arterial muscles.  Calcium is pulled out of the bones when the body becomes too acidic.  This can occur due to the use of some medications, poor diet or when the body is in a state of inflammation, like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.  Calcium is involved at the level of the cell with the structure of the RNA and DNA molecules and the activation of enzymes for the use of fats.  Calcium is commonly recommended by natural health care practitioners for osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, cardiovascular disease, PMS, pregnancy, cancer prevention, nervous disorders, and insomnia.

Synergistic Nutrients

Synergistic Nutrients can make a substantial difference in the uptake of calcium by the bones.  For a variety of different reasons calcium can be difficult to absorb - one of them being that as a mineral, calcium has a negative charge that can repel it from the cells of the body. It's very important, then, for people concerned about bone health that nutrients be taken along with calcium.  Some of them include: magnesium (in a 2:1 ratio), zinc, silica, manganese, copper, boron, and potassium.  While there are others, these are the ones that can make the biggest difference for bioavailability.  Some of these, like magnesium and zinc, can increase absorption in the gut, while others, like the boron and silica increase the actual uptake of calcium by the bones and its subsequent integration as new bone mass.

Why Chelated?

Chelated simply means that a particular mineral is bonded to a protein molecule, for example aspartate or glycinate. This bonding makes it easier to digest and assimilate each nutritive mineral for proper utilization in the body.

  • 1.7/10  Not impressed

    Effectiveness: 1/10

    (+) Good Value
(-)  Gave Me An Upset Stomach,Painful cramping and diarrhea

How did you use it?:Before Bed

"I've only taken this the past 3 evenings (with food, as it recommends), but I've woken up all 3 mornings in pain and with diarrhea. I assumed it was something I ate until day 3. After some research about a zinc overdose causing these symptoms, I'm fairly confident this supplement is the culprit. I won't be trying it a 4th day to confirm. It does contain more than 100% of the RDI (25mg, compared to the needed 15mg), which seems pointless to me considering the possible side effects that can occur.

My other issue with this product is actually with Vitamart's description. My husband and I are trying to conceive, and Vitamart's information states nothing about this supplement not being safe to take while pregnant/breastfeeding. The product, however, warns against it. I specifically purchased this (500 of them, stupidly) for support while pregnant, but between the issues I'm having while not pregnant, and not being able to take them anyway if I am, I'm very disappointed that I wasted $30."
