Magnesium oxide is one of the most common forms of magnesium, valued for its high elemental magnesium content — it packs a lot of magnesium into a small dose. It isn’t absorbed as well as chelated forms like bisglycinate, so it’s often chosen as a simple, high-dose way to top up overall intake, and it’s also known for a gentle laxative effect. Like all magnesium, it helps support normal muscle and nerve function. You’ll find it here as powders, capsules and tablets. Not sure which magnesium is right for you? Try our Magnesium Quiz. What magnesium oxide is

Magnesium oxide is magnesium bound to oxygen. By weight it has one of the highest elemental magnesium contents of any form, meaning a small tablet can carry a large amount of magnesium. That makes it a practical, space-efficient choice — with the trade-off that the body absorbs a smaller fraction of it than gentler chelated forms.

Absorption and the laxative effect

Because a good portion of magnesium oxide passes through unabsorbed, it draws water into the bowel — which is why it’s well known for a gentle laxative effect and is often used for occasional constipation. The same property means very high doses can cause loose stools, so it’s best to start low and build up. It still helps raise magnesium intake overall.

How to take it

Take magnesium oxide with water and ideally with food. Powders dissolve into water for a flexible dose, while tablets and capsules are convenient. Start with a lower amount to see how your body responds, and follow the serving size on your product.

Choosing the right magnesium form

Different forms suit different goals: oxide for a high-dose top-up and occasional regularity; bisglycinate (glycinate) for a gentle, well-absorbed option often used for calm and sleep; and citrate for moderate absorption with a mild digestive effect.
