Vitalux Advanced Soft Gels Details
The AREDS2 nutrient set — lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc, copper, vitamin C and vitamin E — delivered in an oil-based softgel rather than a compressed caplet. Two daily with food.
One point is worth being straight about. The AREDS trials studied people who already had intermediate or advanced age-related macular degeneration, and found a reduction in the rate of progression — not prevention in healthy eyes, and not reversal of damage already done. The licensed claim reflects that: it helps delay the progression of AMD.
The softgel format is the reason to choose this one. Lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin E are all fat-soluble, and here they are already suspended in medium chain triglycerides rather than pressed into a dry tablet. That does not remove the instruction to take it with food, but it does mean the carotenoids arrive already dissolved in a lipid.
Zinc is 12.5mg per softgel, lower than the 40mg in the Vitalux caplet formulas and matching the level AREDS2 itself tested across a two-unit dose. Copper is still present at 1mg to offset depletion. This is the gentler option for anyone already taking zinc elsewhere.
There is no beta-carotene, which is what makes AREDS2 formulations appropriate for people with a smoking history. At 90 softgels this is 45 days, the longest run in the Vitalux range apart from the 120-caplet Advanced.
The shell is bovine gelatin and the formula contains beeswax, so it is not vegetarian or vegan.
Vitalux is a Canadian eye-health range built around the AREDS and AREDS2 clinical formulations, sold largely through optometrists and pharmacies.
Who Vitalux Advanced Soft Gels Is For
This suits people with diagnosed AMD who find softgels easier than caplets, and anyone who wants the AREDS2 nutrient set at the lower zinc level. The 45-day run makes it convenient for a long-term regimen.
It contains bovine gelatin and beeswax — not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. It is not a preventive for healthy eyes. Consult a practitioner before use if you have cancer, and check your total zinc intake before adding it to other supplements. Supplements do not replace regular eye examinations; AMD needs monitoring by an eye care professional.
