Naka Platinum Pure Organic Vegetable Glycerine Details

Naka Platinum Pure Organic Vegetable Glycerine is 100% pure vegetable glycerine in a 270ml bottle — a hypoallergenic skin moisturizer sold mainly as a DIY skin care base. It has a rich, lubricating, oily texture yet is easily soluble in water, and Naka describes it as cleaning, softening and moisturizing skin.

Because it is derived entirely from vegetable oil, Naka calls it hypoallergenic and suitable for all of your favourite cosmetic applications — its softening and moisturizing features aimed at making your own facial and body care products. It has a sweet taste and a long shelf life, as it is not easily oxidized. Naka states it is a natural product derived from non-GMO palm oil or vegetable oil. Made in Canada.

Who This Vegetable Glycerine Is For

  • People making their own facial and body care products — the use Naka puts front and centre
  • Anyone who has found an oil alone cannot hold water in a formula
  • Home formulators wanting a water-soluble base that blends into toners, mists, gels and masks
  • Shoppers who prefer a single-ingredient bottle with nothing added, declared hypoallergenic
  • Buyers who want a base that keeps — glycerine does not easily oxidize

Who this product is NOT for: this is not a carrier oil, despite the oily feel — essential oils do not dissolve in glycerine, so for diluting them you want Naka Platinum Pure Jojoba Oil or Naka Platinum Pure Sweet Organic Almond Oil. For a finished product you apply straight from the bottle, a cream from our Body Lotion & Creams range is less work. And for a sealing layer over cracked skin, a heavy oil or butter does that and glycerine doesn't.

Vitamart's Take

We stock this for the DIY shelf, not the skin care shelf. Vegetable glycerine is one of the three or four ingredients that make home formulation work — the one that pulls and holds water — and it is inexpensive per use next to buying it already blended into a toner. A 270ml bottle outlasts a great many batches, because most recipes call for a few percent, not a few tablespoons.

The trade-off is that glycerine is not pleasant used neat, and we would rather say so than let you find out. Undiluted it is syrupy and tacky, and in very dry air a heavy layer can feel tight rather than hydrating. It wants water alongside it: a few drops into a damp palm, a spoonful into a bottle of water or aloe, a small percentage in a cream. Used that way it is one of the most reliable moisturizing ingredients there is. Used straight from the bottle on dry skin it disappoints — and that one misunderstanding accounts for most of the bad reviews glycerine gets.

How This Vegetable Glycerine Compares

Glycerine is not competing with the oils beside it — it does a different job, and the comparison worth making is against the other ways of getting that job done.

  • Versus a carrier oil: oils sit on skin and slow water escaping; glycerine attracts water into the outer skin instead. A good homemade moisturizer has both, which is why people who buy one end up buying the other.
  • Versus a ready-made hydrating serum or toner: most are mainly water plus glycerine plus preservative and fragrance. Here you buy the active part and add the water yourself.
  • Versus glycerine sold as a craft supply: grade and purity are the thing to check. Naka states 100% pure, hypoallergenic, derived from non-GMO palm oil or vegetable oil, and made in Canada.

Why Glycerine Is A Humectant, Not An Emollient

Moisturizing ingredients do three different jobs, and glycerine only does one. Occlusives — heavy oils, butters, waxes — form a barrier that slows water evaporating out of skin. Emollients are the oils and esters that slot between surface skin cells and smooth them. Humectants are water-attracting: they pull moisture toward the outer layer of skin and hold it there. Glycerine is the reference humectant, a small three-armed molecule where every arm ends in a hydroxyl group that hydrogen-bonds to water. That is why it feels oily in the bottle yet dissolves in water instantly — the arms that grip water are the same ones that stop it behaving like a fat.

Two practical consequences follow. A humectant needs water available to move: on damp skin or in a watery base, glycerine draws moisture in and holds it, while applied neat to dry skin in dry air it feels tacky rather than soft. And humectants and occlusives are complements, not rivals — glycerine brings water into the surface, an oil on top keeps it from leaving. That pairing is the architecture of nearly every moisturizer you have bought; buying the two separately is buying those layers unassembled, at your own ratio.

How To Use

Naka does not publish a measured amount for this bottle — it is a base ingredient, used at whatever proportion your formula calls for. Naka's stated uses are as a skin moisturizer and cleanser that softens and lubricates, and as an ingredient for making your own facial and body care products, where it is easily soluble in water and suitable for all of your favourite cosmetic applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

➕ Can I apply it straight from the bottle?
You can, but most people find neat glycerine syrupy and tacky. It works far better on damp skin or diluted into a water-based product, because it needs water to draw on.
➕ Is vegetable glycerine the same as glycerin or glycerol?
Same substance, different names. "Vegetable" refers to the source, which Naka gives as non-GMO palm oil or vegetable oil.
➕ Can I use it to dilute essential oils?
No — essential oils don't dissolve into glycerine, so you get separation rather than a blend. Use a carrier oil for that and keep glycerine for the water-based part of a formula.
➕ Why does it taste sweet?
Naka notes the sweet taste, which is characteristic of glycerine and why it turns up as a sweetener and texture agent elsewhere. This bottle is sold for skin care use.
➕ How long does an opened bottle keep?
A long time. Naka states glycerine has a long shelf life because it is not easily oxidized — one reason it is a practical bulk ingredient next to a delicate pressed oil.
➕ What else do I need to make my own moisturizer?
A water phase, glycerine as the humectant and an oil as the emollient, plus an emulsifier to keep the two mixed. Anything containing water also needs a preservative unless used within days.
