What is beta-sitosterol?

Beta-sitosterol is the most common plant sterol, or phytosterol — a compound that occurs naturally in nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, and other plant foods. Because its structure is similar to cholesterol, it competes with cholesterol for absorption in the gut, which is the basis for plant sterols' well-known association with healthy cholesterol levels. Beta-sitosterol is also one of the sterols studied in the context of men's prostate wellness.
