Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid that forms part of every cell membrane, with especially high concentrations in the brain. Because of that role, it’s one of the more popular supplements for supporting memory, focus and everyday cognitive function, and some people use it to help cope with the mental demands of a busy day. You’ll find it here mostly as 100 mg capsules and softgels — including soy-free, sunflower-derived options and formulas paired with acetyl-L-carnitine or DHA. Shipped across Canada from our Ontario warehouse.

    What phosphatidylserine does

Phosphatidylserine is a type of fat (a phospholipid) that helps make up the membranes of your cells, and it’s found in high amounts in brain tissue. Supplementing is most often associated with memory, concentration and cognitive function, and some people take it to support a calm, focused state when mental demands are high. Levels can decline with age, which is part of why it’s a popular pick among older adults and students alike.

    Choosing a phosphatidylserine supplement

A few things set products apart:

    • Source — soy or sunflower. Traditionally PS was made from soy; sunflower-derived PS is a popular soy-free alternative with the same active ingredient.
    • Strength. 100 mg per capsule is the most common dose, with some products offering 150 mg.
    • On its own or in a blend. You’ll find straight PS as well as formulas that pair it with acetyl-L-carnitine, DHA or other brain-support ingredients.

    How to take it

Phosphatidylserine is usually taken with food, and many people split it across the day. As with any supplement it works best taken consistently rather than occasionally. If you take medication — particularly blood thinners — or are pregnant or nursing, check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.
