Borage oil is the richest plant source of GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) — an omega-6 fatty acid the body uses in small amounts, and the reason borage sits alongside evening primrose on the shelf. It’s usually taken as 1000 mg softgels, with organic and hexane-free options available. Vitamart ships borage oil from Ontario.

About borage oil

Borage oil is pressed from the seeds of the borage plant, sometimes called starflower. Its claim to fame is GLA content: borage typically carries roughly twice the GLA of evening primrose oil, which means a smaller dose gets you the same amount. GLA is an omega-6 — a fatty acid family most people get plenty of overall, but GLA specifically is scarce in food. You'll see it sold as straight 1000 mg softgels, as a cold-pressed organic oil, and blended into omega 3-6-9 formulas alongside fish and flax.

Borage vs evening primrose

Both are the go-to plant sources of GLA, and both are used for the same reasons — the practical difference is concentration. Because borage is roughly twice as rich in GLA, you generally need fewer softgels to reach the same amount, which is why some people prefer it. Evening primrose oil remains the more familiar name, and plenty of people stay with it. Neither is a wrong choice; compare the GLA per softgel on the label.

Forms and what to look for

The standard is a 1000 mg softgel. Beyond that, look for how the oil was extracted — cold-pressed, expeller-pressed and hexane-free all mean the oil was separated without chemical solvents — and whether it's certified organic. Borage also turns up inside omega 3-6-9 blends with fish and flax oil, and as a topical skin oil. See the wider healthy oils & omegas range.
