Bifidobacterium is a major group of beneficial gut bacteria — one of the most common probiotic types, alongside lactobacillus. Bifidobacteria live mainly in the large intestine, where they support digestion, help balance the gut microbiome and contribute to immune health. People take bifidobacterium probiotics for everyday gut support, or after stress or antibiotics disrupt their natural balance. You'll find single-strain and multi-strain formulas here in capsules, powders and drops, in both shelf-stable and refrigerated options. Shipped across Canada from our Ontario warehouse.

What bifidobacterium does

Bifidobacteria are beneficial bacteria that live mainly in the large intestine, where they help support digestion, balance the gut microbiome and contribute to immune health. A bifidobacterium supplement helps replenish these bacteria — useful after antibiotics, illness or periods of stress can knock the gut's natural balance out.

Bifidobacterium vs lactobacillus

These are the two most common probiotic groups. Bifidobacterium works mainly in the large intestine, while lactobacillus is more active in the small intestine. Many probiotics combine both for broader, full-tract support — so you'll often see them together on a label.

How to choose

  • CFU count — strengths here range widely, from a few billion to 100 billion+; match it to how much support you want.
  • Single vs multi-strain — single-strain formulas are focused, while multi-strain blends cover more of the microbiome.
  • Format — capsules, powders and drops (including baby drops); some pair with prebiotics.
  • Shelf-stable vs refrigerated — shelf-stable is easiest for travel; refrigerated formulas must be kept cold.

Safety information

Bifidobacterium supplements are generally well tolerated, though some people notice mild gas or bloating when first starting — usually temporary as the gut adjusts. If you're pregnant, immunocompromised, have a medical condition or take medication, check with a healthcare professional before use.
