Astaxanthin is a deep-red carotenoid — the antioxidant pigment that gives salmon, shrimp, and krill their colour, sourced for supplements from microalgae. It’s one of the most potent antioxidants found in nature, which is why it’s popular for skin and eye support and general cellular protection from oxidative stress. You’ll find it here as softgels from 4 mg to 20 mg, some paired with lutein and zeaxanthin for eyes or with krill oil. It’s a fat-soluble nutrient, so it’s best taken with a meal.

    What astaxanthin is

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid — a natural pigment — and it's the deep red that gives salmon, shrimp, and krill their colour. For supplements it's grown from microalgae (Haematococcus pluvialis), the same source those animals get it from in the wild. It's regarded as one of the most potent antioxidants found in nature, which is the foundation of why people take it.

    Skin and eye support

Astaxanthin's two best-known uses both come back to its antioxidant strength. For skin, it provides antioxidant support that helps protect skin cells from everyday oxidative stress. For the eyes, it's often paired with lutein and zeaxanthin — carotenoids concentrated in the eye — in vision-focused formulas. In both cases it's about antioxidant support rather than a cure for anything.

    Forms and strengths

Astaxanthin comes as oil-based softgels, commonly from 4 mg to 20 mg. Because it's fat-soluble, it's best taken with a meal that contains some fat. You'll also find it combined with other ingredients — lutein and zeaxanthin for eyes, or krill oil, which naturally contains a little astaxanthin alongside its omega-3s.

    Astaxanthin in Canada

Astaxanthin supplements sold in Canada carry a Natural Product Number (NPN) from Health Canada and ship from our Ontario warehouse to addresses across Canada. Most is algae-sourced; check the label if you need a vegetarian softgel.

    A note on astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is well tolerated. At very high doses the pigment can give skin a faint orange tint, which is harmless, and it may lower blood pressure slightly. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication, check with your healthcare provider before use.
