Transdermal magnesium means magnesium chloride delivered through the skin — as a spray-on oil, a lotion, a gel, or dissolved in warm water as bath flakes. Ancient Minerals sources its magnesium chloride from an ancient underground seabed deposit, which is where the name comes from. The ULTRA products add MSM, a sulphur compound often paired with magnesium.

The forms

The oil spray is the most concentrated and easiest to target on a specific area; the lotion is gentler and moisturising for everyday use; the gel sits somewhere in between; and the bath flakes dissolve into a warm soak for a full-body option. The ULTRA version of each adds MSM.

How to use it

Magnesium oil is usually spritzed onto arms, legs or shoulders and rubbed in; some people notice a light tingle at first, which tends to ease with regular use. Lotions and gels go on like any skin product. Bath flakes are added to warm bathwater for a soak. There's no pill to swallow, so it's an easy option to keep by the sink or tub.
