Q3: How and when should sports supplements be taken for optimal results?

A3: To get the optimal results from your sports supplements, it’s important to know how to use them. How and when you use your bodybuilding supplements will depend upon what they are.

  • Amino acids generally come in capsule form, and are best taken pre- and post-workout.
  • Branched chain amino acids generally come in capsule or tablet form, and are best taken pre- or post-workout.
  • Creatine should be taken in small, frequent doses. Try a week-long loading phase in which you take 5 grams four times per day, followed by a maintenance phase in which you take 3 to 5 grams per day. Creatine is the world`s most popular strength and muscle building supplement. You can get pre-mixed creatine formula`s, creatine pills or pure creatine powder.
  • Glutamine supplements come in powder form, and can be added to other shakes and liquid supplements. The best time to take glutamine is about two hours after your workout, when glutamine levels are at their lowest. If your regimen is very intense, or if your muscles tend to take a long time to recover, two doses per day may be considered.
  • Pre-workout supplements should be taken before training, to ensure that the body gets the nutrients it needs for the added benefits of strength, endurance, and energy.
  • Post-workout supplements should be taken immediately following training, to ensure that muscles are repaired and rebuilt, and that depleted nutrients are replaced.
  • Testosterone boosters come in capsule form. How you take them will vary according to the product, so be sure to read the label carefully. Those who take testosterone boosters should not take them continuously, but should take a break from them every month or two.
  • Endurance supplements are best used before, during, or after your workout. If you want to train longer and harder, take your endurance sports supplement before training. If you are engaging in intense exercise that lasts more than one hour, take you can take endurance supplements during your workout. Finally, if you intend to train hard again the next day, taking an endurance supplement post-workout is key for building up depleted energy stores.
  • Athletic performance supplements can also be used before, during, or after your workout.
  • ZMA supplements should be taken at bedtime, when the stomach is empty.
  • HGH supplements come in pill form. How frequently you take them will vary according to the product. Many HGH supplements suggest two tablets per day, one in the morning and one in the evening.
  • Supplement stacks come in powder or liquid form. Because the ingredients vary according to your goals, how and when you take supplement stacks will vary from product to product.
  • Vasodilators should be taken in one to three doses throughout the day, preferably on an empty stomach.
