Answers to Frequently Asked Time Released Protein Questions
Q1: What is a time released protein made up of, and how does it differ from other proteins?
A1: Essentially, time released protein powder is made up of a combination of a:
- Fast-acting protein like whey
- Medium-acting protein like egg
- Slow-acting protein like casein.
The speed at which the protein “acts” is basically the speed at which your body absorbs the protein.
By manipulating the combination of proteins, the body is guaranteed an immediate release of protein as soon as the time released protein powder is consumed. But it doesn’t end there. Protein continues to be released in a sustained manner for several hours as the different type of proteins absorb (act) at different rates thus providing a staggered release of protein into your body. Time released protein powders reduce the need to consume several different kinds of protein powders throughout the day, and are very versatile.
Q2: What are the advantages and disadvantages of time released proteins?
A2: Like any protein, time released proteins come with a full array of pros and cons. Whether or not the pros will outweigh the cons—or vice versa—will depend upon your particular needs and goals.
The advantages of time released protein powder includes:
- Time released protein powder is versatile, and can be used many times throughout the day.
- Time released protein powder combines immediate release of protein with a sustained release of protein.
- Because digestion takes longer, the body is better able to use the nutrients from time released proteins.
The disadvantages of time released protein powder include:
- Time released protein powders don’t allow you to control the release of protein.
- Those with advanced exercise and weight lifting routines may not see the best benefits with time released protein powders.
Q3: How and when should time released protein be taken for optimal results?
A3: Time released protein powder combines fast-acting protein like whey with a slower acting protein like casein or egg, allowing protein to be released immediately upon consumption as well as over a sustained period of time. Time released proteins work best for those who are just beginning an exercise and weight training program, as well as those who engage in moderate exercise and weight training.
While time released protein can be taken at any time during the day, the best time to take it will depend upon your particular goals.
If you are just beginning a exercise and weight lifting program and want to maintain a healthy body weight or lose fat . . .
You can take time released protein powder at any time during the day—in the morning, between meals, pre-and post workout, or before bedtime.
If you are just beginning an exercise and weight program and want to build lean muscle . . .
The best times to take time released protein powder is in the morning, between meals, pre-workout, and at bedtime.
If you are a beginning bodybuilder, the best time to take time released protein powder is . . .
Between meals, pre-workout, and at bedtime.
If your goals include maintaining a healthy body weight, building lean muscle, gaining weight, or losing fat, and you engage in a moderate exercise and weight program, the best time to take time released protein powder is . . .
Between meals.
Q4: Why do the absorption rates of protein and how our bodies absorb protein really matter?
A4: Basically our bodies can only absorb a certain amount of protein in one sitting. Your size, activity levels and body makeup will determine this amount.
For the average person you want to stay in the range of 20-40g per sitting. This protein absorption level also varies depending on the time of day. Early in the morning and following a workout our bodies have a HIGHER protein absorption rate. This is because our bodies our bodies have been starving for protein for many hours (from sleeping the night before) and are screaming for protein to repair, rebuild and recover your muscle tissue (following your workout). The higher the protein absorption rate the faster the absorption rate you want. ie. Whey protein, ideally whey isolate protein.
Any other time of the day besides early morning or post-workout (during the day or before bed) your body has a LOWER protein absorption rate and thus requires a slower absorbing protein such as egg or casein, or a time released protein.
If you consume a fast acting protein at the time of the day your body has a lower protein absorption rate you run the risk of your body not fully absorbing the protein and thus defeating the purpose of taking protein.
In summary by ensuring purchase the right type of protein for the time of day you will be taking it you will:
- Get better results – the protein you are taking will be absorbing better and you will experience the full benefits of the great supplement
- Save money – purchasing the wrong type of protein may result in numerous $$$ worth of protein being literally flushed down the toilet
