Side effects:

In proper doses, vitamin C is well tolerated without significant side effects even with long-term administration. High doses (upwards of 2000 mg) can exceed bowel tolerance and cause gastrointestinal symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, heartburn, abdominal cramps, gastrointestinal obstruction, and diarrhea, as well as fatigue, flushing, headache, insomnia, sleepiness, and red blood cell and urinary complications (Food and Nutrition Board, 2000). Taking vitamin C with food can help to minimize the likelihood of adverse effects.

Vitamin C may increase oxalic acid levels in urine, which could increase the risk of kidney stones, especially in people with a history of stones (Traxer et al., 2003).
