D-Aspartic Acid (DAA) is the D-form of the amino acid aspartic acid. D-Aspartic Acid is found in higher concentrations in specific tissues in the body, specifically found in the testes, pituitary gland, and hypothalamus (D'Aniello & Di Fiore 2000) all of which are areas involved in hormone production. What Does D-Aspartic Acid Do?

Shown in actual human studies to increase testosterone levels effectively. A study by Topo et al. showed that supplementing with 3.12 grams of DAA increased circulating luteinizing hormone (LH) levels by 33% and testosterone levels by 42% in men aged 27-37 years old (Topo & Soricelli 2009). Note that this increase in testosterone was in healthy men with normal testosterone function (not animals or hypogonadal men). The increase in testosterone by 42% was after only 12 days of supplementation and testosterone levels returned to baseline three days after stopping DAA. One subject showed an increase of 84%. 

Results also indicated anti-estrogen properties on this male men study, and other factors from the studies also indicate anticatabolic (lower cortisol) effects too, important for those looking for greater recovery and growth. Studies have not yet been done in women, but one animal study yielded results that suggests only men can benefit from DAA. Further studies need to be done to examine DAA¼s affects on actual estrogen and prolactin levels, but at this time there are no side effects reported with DAA use. DAA is a natural amino acid found in our food supply and produced by the body making it a great tool to naturally increase healthy males¼ testosterone production.

Due to DAA¼s action at the pituitary gland it should also increase growth hormone (GH) levels. When using D-Aspartic acid, animal studies reveal high concentrations of endogenous NMDA (N-methyl-d-aspartic acid) in the brain. D-Aspartic acid is converted into NMDA which enhances the release of Growth Hormone Release Hormone (GHRH) and Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), also known as luteinizing-hormone releasing hormone (LHRH). GHRH does exactly what it sounds like, releasing growth hormone into the body. However, while human trials specifically measuring for this outcome are needed, it is certainly an interesting possibility to consider and welcome effect if D-Aspartic acid does increase concentrations of human growth hormone.
