Q2: What are the advantages and disadvantages of fish oil?

A2: Like all dietary supplements in Canada, fish oil has its pros and cons. Whether or not fish oil is right for you depends upon your personal needs and goals.

Advantages of fish oil include:

  • Fish oil is rich in omega 3 fatty acids such as DHA and EPA, as well as other essential fatty acids.
  • Fish oil improves blood circulation, boosting heart health and lowering cholesterol.
  • Fish oil is good for the skin, and can help prevent acne and psoriasis.
  • Fish oil boosts your mood, and can prevent or minimize depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders.

Disadvantages of fish oil include:

  • Many people don’t like the taste of fish oil. (Alternative: Try fish oil softgels)
  • Fish oil can contain contaminants. (Ensure fish oil is molecularly distilled)
  • Fish oil can go rancid, and must be consumed relatively quickly.

Q3: How and when should fish oil be taken for optimal results?

A3: Fish oil in Canada comes in both liquid and capsule forms. While most liquid forms will have a higher amount of omega 3 fatty acids per dose than fish oil in the capsule form, many people can’t abide the taste. When all is said and done, if you can’t tolerate the taste of the liquid and find yourself skipping doses, it’s better to go with the capsules than to get no benefit at all.

Fish oil should be taken at meals. In order to avoid stomach upset and cramps, avoid taking fish oil on an empty stomach.

Q4: How do I know what kind of fish oil to buy?

A4: That’s a good question, considering the amount of fish oil supplements on the market in Canada. There are five basic things to look for when purchasing fish oil.

  1. Fish oil should be pharmaceutical grade.
  2. Fish oil should be molecular distilled.
  3. Fish oil should be wild sourced.
  4. Fish oil should contain a high percentage of the omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. The industry standard is about 30% per dose, but the best fish oils will contain more than 60%.
  5. Fish oil should come with complimentary support ingredients, such as our Ultimate Fish Oil product. This product comes in formulas for both men and women, and offers ingredients in addition to fish oil that support the lifestyle, diet, hormonal, and physiological needs of each gender.

Q5: What is the difference between taking fish oil and flax oil?

A5: If you’ve done a little bit of research, you know that both fish oil and flax oil are a good source of the omega 3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA. So is one better than the other?

Quite simply, yes. Fish oil is the better choice when it comes to getting your omega 3s. Why? When you take fish oil, you get the active ingredients out of DHA and EPA. Flax oil, on the other hand, has to go through a complicated process before it’s converted into DHA and EPA.

All things being equal, fish oil is the better source of omega 3 fatty acids.
